Idir

 

Among the most enduring, universal, effective, and relevant socio-economic informal institutions Ethiopians have created is Idir. Idir is an association established among neighbors or workers to raise funds that will be used during emergencies, such as death within these groups and their families.

 

We at the Ethiopian-Canadians Community Association in Edmonton became a catalyst for the creation of Idir in our city whereby an independent association was created in 2016/17. This Idir currently serves over 250 family members and uses the community centre for its various activities including a monthly meetup, a place of gathering for consoling families who lost their loved ones, etc..
